Story

Lyra and Lanre defended cities of the empire and helped them recognize the need for allegience. It gave people hope.Then came the blac of Drossen Tor, the largest battle. More died there than live today. Lanre fought a beast with scales of black iron whose breath was darkness that smothered men. He died. Lyra called to him to live and eventually he did. Peace began settling on the empire. After hearing rumors of Lyra's death and Lanre's madness, he shows up in Myr Tariniel. Lanre wishes to talk to Selitos. Selitos offers his aid, but Lanre binds him:

Silanxi, I bind you. by the name of stone, be as stone. Aeruh, I command the air. Lay leaden on your tongue. Selitos, I name you. May all your powers fail you but your sight."

Lanre was able to do this despite a prior lack of naming skill. An army took Myr Tariniel, burned it black while Selitos could only watch. He swore to sow salt lest bitter weeds grow and took up the name Haliax. Selitos stabbed his eye with a stone breaking the enchantment. He cursed Lanre with his own blood.

Aleph had requested something of Selitos. He also wants him to only punish or reward what he sees and to put away personal issues. He refuses and with some of the Ruach form the Amyr.

Tehlo comes forward with others and offers to serve in any way. Aleph gave them wings of fire and shadow, iron and glass, stone and blood. fire flickered in them, they were swift, saw into the hearts of men and sang songs of power, the fire consumed them and they were invisible, but the most powerful can see them and they carry out justice
